San Benedetto in Alpe: The history of San Benedetto is tied to the Benedictine Abbey, one of most ancient of the Appennine.
We have news of a nucleus of hermits from X century and, approximately a century after, here Saint Romualdo lived before founding Camaldoli. In these places stayed also Dante in the period of his exile as he told by verses in the Divine Commedy (Hell, Song XVI).
The forfeiture of the Abbey began on ending of XIV century, when it passed under the administration of the Basilica of San Lorenzo of Florence. Today in the evocative halls of the ancient Molino, there is the Visitor Center of the Park of the Casentinesi Forests.
