Meldola: The history of Meldola is marked by bitter conflicts which underlined its strategic importance. The construction of the imposing castle which dominates the small town, for example, was the work of the archbishops of Ravenna.
As was the case with the whole of Romagna, Meldola was ruled over by a series of lords and squires who struggled among themselves for dominance. Among these families were the Ordelaffi, Malatestas and Aldobarandini who left behind a number of monuments which characterise the town.
These include the Aldobrandini Gallery and the "dei Veneziani" Bridge. Meldola was the centre of a number of important economic phenomena - the breeding of silkworms, the production of silk mills, the site of important mines and agricultural markets - which brought the town to the attention of traders from all over the country.
