Galeata: The little town of the Upper Bidente Valley lies on a river terrace in the middle of a valley dominated by a high and picturesque cliff. Here the first human settlements appeared in the prehistoric age, like the objects conserved in the civic archaeological museum of Pianetto certificate. Born out of the private collection of Mons.
Domenico Mambrini (1879-1944), this museum is further enriched by numerous findings discovered during the excavations conducted in Galeata archaeological sites of Mevaniola and of the Theodoric villa and by materials from the Abbey of San Ellero.
In the Roman time, close to the present town centre, was infact the town of Mevaniola, of which it is possible to visit today the ancient archaeological site. In the Middle Ages the village was ruled by the powerful Abbey of Sant'Ellero and then fell under the influence of the Florentines for several centuries.
