Classe: The name "in Classe" comes from the ancient Roman city of "Civitas Classis" which grew up around the port and was improved by Cesare Augusto Ottaviano.
Saint Apollinare arrived here at the end of the 2nd C. and organised the first Christian communities of which he was the bishop. When he died he was buried outside the city walls where the Basilica now stands, among the eight UNESCO World Heritage sites of the city of Ravenna.
Nowadays, Classe is a modern town which has grown up around the Basilica and was given a new lease of life in the 19th C. by the sugar factory. This has been abandoned for a number of years, but is due to become an Archaeological Museum of world importance.
