Comunale Theater Ferrara

Located a few meters from the Estense Castle, the Comunale Theater of Ferrara is characterized by the contrast between the sober facades and exquisite interiors, discreetly inserted into a architectural complex context. Since its opening in 1798 until 1900, it was the reference of the city as a venue for performances and place of social meetings.

FOCUS SUL LOCALE

After the ceasing of activities because of World War II, in the late 50s the Municipality renovated and reopened the Theater on October 31, 1964. Since then the goals of being a center of cultural quality, to grow professionally, opening up to new collaborations, to offer itself as a reference in the formation of the public were of pivotal importance. The theater is one of the 23 theaters in the Italian tradition since 1994 it has taken the form of legal institution. Each year from October to June, an average of 100 performances are planned of dramas, dance, opera, concerts, experimental theater and shows for kids, for a total of over 300 performances, over 150 days of activities including conferences, seminars, training courses and exhibitions. The total number of subscribers exceeds 4 thousand units and this year there are over 25 thousand admissions.
Historical notes
It was in Ferrara, in the Duchy of Ferrara the modern theater was born, about which first records date back to the fifteenth century: in 1486, for the Carnival, in the courtyard of the Palazzo Ducale a representation of Menaechmi of Plautus was staged. Already in 1508, for Cassaria of Ariosto, the "scaena" was transformed into a fund prospectus, and in 1531, with the same comedy, was inaugurated the first permanent theater of the court of history. After the transfer of the capital of the duchy of Modena and the devolution of Ferrara to the Vatican, the theatrical tradition of the city is kept alive thanks to the noble families who make the first theater buildings: the Intrepidi Theater, the Theater of the Sala Grande (1610) and the Teatro in Cortile; Bonacossa Theater back in 1662 (the first public theater in the city on payment) and in 1692 the Scrofa Theater
The activities of the theater
About 80 performances of dramas, dance, opera, concerts, experimental theater and for children are some of the over 160 performances each year. Over 4 thousand subscribers and during the season there are more than 25 thousand visitors. The "numbers" of the Comunale Theater di Ferrara are some of the many facets of its business, but are the quality and the articulation of the proposed artistic elements that have demonstrated this theater as one the most important Italian theaters. The "seasons" is a selection of high quality proposals in which the classical repertoire is attached to the international contemporary repertoire. This choice has proved to be a strong point for the Theater of Ferrara, and has determined to be a growing focus of criticism, both the formation of a large and motivated interest that has created the ideal condition for the initiation of a productive activity
