Arena del Sole Theater Bologna: A place for daytime shows, which according to the inscription above the entrance, was opened July 5, 1810. It was Built on the initiative of Pietro Bonini, dealer in leather, such as outdoor theater in masonry, stands in the area in which during the sixteenth century there was a convent of Dominican nuns of St. Mary Magdalene then abandoned after the abolition of religious orders during the Napoleonic occupation of Bologna.

Even today there are still some parts of the original convent, which the cloister, used during summer for spectacular action. Its architecture was inspired by neo-classical, baroque deemed antagonistic to that class, pursuant Jacobin ideology that gave the theater a crucial role in the cultural and political life of the people.
Throughout the nineteenth and for the first part of twentieth century the Arena was the preferred destination by large companies during the period from Easter to the end of September. To mention only some of the great actors who have trod the stage: Tommaso Salvini , Eleonora Duse, Giovanni Emanuel, Irma Gramatica, Ermete Zacconi, Ermete Novelli, Ruggero Ruggeri, Dina Galli, Virginia Marini, Lyda Borelli, Ettore Petrolini, Maria Melato, Paola Borboni, Marta Abba, Renzo Ricci. Since 1916 the theater was endowed by removable covers, gradually more and more perfected, which allowed the holding of a winter program, including films. The films escalated in the 30's, sign of the dramatic transformation of the theater into a cinema in 1949. In 1984 the City of Bologna bought the property. The theater housed two temporary theater seasons, 1984/85 and 1985/86, under the artistic direction of Yuri Lyubimova, and then, since 1986, thanks to the Municipality itself and of the Emilia Romagna region, opened the radical restructuring that led in 1995 to be reborn to new life under the direction of Nuova Scena-Teatro Stabile di Bologna
